Event Photography Pricing - How Much Does Event Photography Really Cost?

So, you secured an incredible venue, invited your entire email list and hired a top-notch caterer to keep your guests happy, but then it dawns on you - what about an event photographer to capture the day?! How much does event photography really cost? Can we really bring on an event photographer with our budget?

The answer, like most things, is that it depends. Event photography pricing ranges. Things like the photographer’s level of experience, how many hours of coverage required and any travel requirements all play a role in event photography pricing.

Experience Matters

There are beginner photographers and amateurs that charge anywhere from $25 per hour to $100 per hour for event photography. Depending on the type of event you’re hosting, this may be fine, but, if you’re planning a big corporate event with lots of moving components throughout the day, you’ll want a photographer who not only has the expertise to adapt to the changing scenes, but also the equipment resources that are required.

Professional event photographers may charge above $100 per hour, but, with that, comes all of their high-end equipment as well. It is very hard to properly photograph an event with a single camera lens. Some shots (like group photos) require wider angle lenses, while other shots (speeches, awards, candid photos) require telephoto zoom lenses to ensure that each shot looks professional, and that the photographer is able to capture the moment from a distance to avoid interfering with the event itself.

Professional event photography pricing can range from $100 an hour to over $500 per hour. Keep in mind that, depending on the pre-determined deliverables, the hourly rate may also apply to editing the photos and delivering them as well, which is why it’s best to…

Select Packages If Possible

When selecting an event photographer, look out for event coverage packages that outline a specific number of deliverables, and how long the photographer will be on site. This can help you better plan, as you’ll know exactly how much you’re spending up front on your photographer, and you’ll also be able to select a package that aligns with the duration of your event. You also won’t be surprised with any additional hours added on, as the editing and delivery times are typically incorporated into the package pricing.

At Boxy, we offer event photography packages for a wide range of event lengths, which includes event coverage, editing and photo delivery.

But What if I Want Video Coverage As Well?

If you want video coverage for your event, you will likely need to hire a separate event videographer to do this. The price for event videography is similar to event photographers, so it can add quite a bit of extra cost to the event.

Again, if you can find a package option that also includes some form of videography, that can help keep the costs down. Some photographers are able to capture both photos and videos during an event, while other businesses (like Boxy) offer event photo and video packages and send two people to the event to ensure it’s properly covered.

So, if you’re hosting an event and looking for event photography coverage, you can expect to pay $100 per hour or less for an amateur photographer, or anywhere from $100-$500+ for a professional event photographer. Again, it depends on their experience level, the deliverables and if any travel is required.
